“SOS” in Morse Code

··· −−− ···

The most famous signal in Morse — three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent as one continuous sequence with no letter gaps. Chosen in 1906 because it is unmistakable, not because it abbreviates anything: "Save Our Souls" was invented afterwards. It remains the international distress signal to this day.

Letter by letter

S ··· O −−− S ···

To key it right, hold every dash three times as long as a dot. Leave a short three-unit breath between letters; the slash is the long, seven-unit pause between words. Want to hear it slower or flash it as light? Open it in the morse code translator.
